About 8 months before the Wright Brothers demonstrated controlled, powered and sustained heavier than air human flight, a New Zealander called Richard Pearse climbed into a self made monoplane and flew for about 150 yards before crashing into a hedge on his farm. Pearse went on to invent the aileron and variable pitch air-screw many years ahead of others researching control surfaces.
